Sabine’s Hallway celebrates 10 years in business

A Brooklyn based salon celebrates its 10th anniversary despite gun attackSabine Bellevue

Sabine’s Hallway is a pioneering natural hair salon owned by veteran stylist Sabine Bellevue. The salon recently celebrated their 10th year anniversary in October with a ribbon cutting ceremony and event on the premises of the Brooklyn based salon.

The fact that they are still going is a testament to the strength of character of Sabine herself. The salon has special significance in Brooklyn not simply due to leading the way in natural hair care before it became ‘a thing’, but also because several years ago the salon was attacked by a crazed gun man who shot at Sabine and her customers. One of the customers just happened to be an off duty cop who shot back at the gunman who was then arrested and jailed for 20 years. The incident made national headlines at the time and the off-duty cop was given an award by Ray Kelly and promoted to detective.

The salon closed down after the incident but the owners were resilient and re-opened and have continued to thrive and Sabine Bellevue has since become a passionate community partner and activist.

Owner Sabine Bellevue says while she was scared for her life, ‘The incident motivated me to work harder and invest in my community.’ She has offered free hairdos for teens, hired interns and done volunteer work.

The hairstylists who work at the shop say they are grateful to work in a place that gives back to those who are less fortunate.

Natural hair and swimming

Usually the two don’t go hand in hand but Nana Akua aka LadyXsize, has found a way to stay natural and keep fit

Ladyxsize

As a fitness expert and trainer, my hair goes through a workout, so I am constantly looking for new styles and products to take care of my hair and accommodate my workout lifestyle.

Recently I was offered a chance to participate in Swim London, an initiative to get adults swimming set up by the ASA (Amateur Swimming Association). Swimming has always been one of my biggest fitness bugbears. I used to worry about how to take care of my hair and protect it from the chlorine. This actually prevented me from swimming and that was one of weird wigs the main reasons why I couldn’t and didn’t want to swim. However, never one to shy away from a fitness challenge, I consulted Victoria Akwuagwu, owner of Ziuzo Hair and Beauty, an award winning salon in Lewisham. After visiting her salon she gave me a treatment to set my hair up ready for the challenge ahead and gave me some great hair care tips and advice:

1. Invest in a decent swimming cap, one that fits snuggly2. After your swim, rinse hair thoroughly with lukewarm water3. To help prevent the hair from becoming dehydrated, use a moisturising conditioner. Leave on for five to 10 minutes before rinsing.4. Use a leave-in conditioner to detangle and before blow-drying. Alternatively, let the hair air dry before styling and seal with an oil5. For single plaits, shampoo your hair twice and allow it to dry naturally or blow-dry. skull cap wig Then apply a light oil to your scalp, such as a blend of almond oil, jojoba oil and coconut oil to moisturise. Visit your salon twice a month for a deep cleanse and conditioning treatments

Ladyxsize celebrates swimming 500m for the first time.

Fitness in generalWhatever the fitness challenge, if you struggle to manage your hair, visit your stylist for tips and advice. I have learnt to always keep my scalp moisturised using light oils to prevent excessive dryness. I use the above advice for my hair not just after a swim but a heavy workout too. With this method I have been able to care for my hair, look natural and appreciate my ‘fro. I have even found the most amazing afro hair extensions. HerGivenHair, allows me to add length and body to my afro and I can wear the hair confidently when doing sporting activities. Usually afro hair extensions don’t last long, they tend to get knotted but HerGivenHair extensions are very different.

It has been and amazing educational journey and I am still learning. Going natural was the best thing I ever did. Yes, I still wear wigs and it has only been in the past few years that I have dared to brave my afro in public, but I now love this natural feel and it is the inspiration for my LadyXsize fitness brand.

LadyXsize is currently presenting a programme on BBC Local Radio. For more details on her five to 45 minute fitness workouts visit www.ladyxsize.com

POW! 3 super powers of locs in the 21st century

Their growing strengths in corporate, the community

| halo wigs pics by Kevin Dantes

Folks have been forced to put some much-needed R-E-S-P-E-C-T on locs lately. What was once considered a handicap to landing creative employment opportunities has now secured its place in pop culture and with the general public. Although locs are still battling racial discrimination against some companies in the courts, views that they’re an unkempt and unprofessional hairstyle hold no weight in other fields. Oh, yes! These carefree strands have hit back and dominated in unexpected domains. Here’s exactly how locs have strengthened their natural hair powers for the greater, global good:

1. CLASSROOM CONQUERORS

Locs have aced right through the educational system. From senior leadership positions to substitute teaching jobs, locs have become a mainstay in elementary to college classrooms. Take Boston University School of Law’s dean and law professor Angela Onwuachi-Willig. This legal scholar and loc star makes it her living to educate about topics such as family law and employment discrimination. She’s also an expert in civil rights law and gender/racial inequality.

The late Toni Morrison also made her silver locs part of collegiate experiences. As the first African-American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature during 1993, Morrison unapologetically donned natural hair while writing and teaching at both private institutions and historically black colleges and universities.

Designated the “Hollywood of the South,” Atlanta is home to trendsetting educators and sisterlock queens like Danielle Washington. Washington is founding principal of Kindezi (Bantu word meaning the act of a community educating, loving and valuing every child) at Gideons Elementary. She is the first and only principal of the innovative-learning school to don sisterlocks and proudly so.

2. PAGEANT WORLD WINNERS

International beauty contests have allowed locs to trailblaze and take the crown along the way. Just last year, Anguilla-born Dee-Ann Kentish-Rogers won Miss Universe Great Britain — becoming the first black woman and dreadlocked winner of the competition during its 67th pageant.

Jamaica’s Sanneta Myrie made history three years prior as the first Miss World contestant to vogue locs at the 2015 international event. A historical feat, indeed, especially since Miss World has been around since 1951.

3. HOLLYWOOD MUST-HAVES

The movie and TV industry recently put locs in prominent roles. A-list actress Angela Bassett stunned in snow white faux locs as T’Challa’s mother in 2018’s “Black Panther.” Fingers are crossed she will grace the silver screen again with them when the sequel releases by 2022. Bassett has helped market faux locs as a popular style that comes in a multitude of colours to rope around natural hair or braids.

Behind the camera, director Ava DuVernay has been making gals rethink growing real locs because of her majestic mane. The Emmy winner and Academy Award nominee shares a bevy of her signature cascading trixie wig and high-low looks on insta, proving that locs have a firm foundation in film.

And let’s not forget the pioneering ground award-winning actress and TV personality Whoopi Goldberg has covered with her bob cut locs for decades. Catch her on daytime talk show “The View,” whipping them with every powerful word she says. Honorable TV show mentions: Willow Smith and Lisa Bonet.

How Much Does a Lace Front Wig Cost-

https://www.wigoutlet.com/blogs/news/

?When you’re looking for a fun and unique way to transform your look and you’ve decided a wig is the way to fulfill your vision, what to buy and where to buy it can be intimidating. There are so many options and it can be confusing for first-time buyers to know where to start.

Affordable Name Brand Lace Front WigsProduct shown is Miranda by Jon Renau

For the fashionista looking for a new hair-do, deciding between a lace front or a full lace wig is a great jumping off point, and one of the biggest differences between the two is cost.

Full lace wigs are synthetic or human hair that is weaved into a fully lace structure, which makes them versatile because they can be easier to style. However, the length of time it takes to construct these wigs makes them much more expensive than wigs that have lace only in the front. Full lace wigs also tend to be a bit flimsy, whereas lace-front wigs are stronger and last longer than full lace wigs, because the base doesn’t tear as easily.

Lace front wigs also have an extremely natural look because of the sheer lace strategically placed at the hair-line. Because of this, most professionals would agree that if you’re looking for something a bit sturdier and more cost-effective than the traditional full lace wig, a lace front wig is the best way to go.

Even though lace front wigs are definitely the cheaper option, they can still be more expensive than you might expect. Top-of-the-line, human hair, lace front wigs run anywhere from?$400 to?$3000. Even high-quality synthetic wigs can end up costing upwards of?$1000 from certain high-end wig stores. Though those prices can be jaw dropping for anyone who doesn’t happen to have Beyoncé money burning a hole in their pocket, there are thankfully cheaper ways to get the natural-looking, high quality wig of your dreams.

It’s no secret amongst my friends that my favorite place to find fun, beautiful wigs for an affordable price is wigoutlet.com. They constantly have new inventory coming in, and they have tons wigs that are about forty to fifty percent off those expensive original price-tags. Though the price of their wigs is certainly one long red wigs of the main selling points, it can’t be over-looked how cute and natural-looking the styles of these wigs are. Whether you’re looking for something fresh and young, or timeless and classic, they have great looks in every style.

?Personally, I love the Evanna Mono lace-front wig in Caramel Brown. This cute wig has beachy curls and can be styled and parted any way you want, and I love the?contrast of dark red brown with white blonde highlights throughout. I am also obsessed with the stunning and natural-looking Zara by Jon Renau. This wig comes in so many beautiful colors with so much depth and gloss, and the length and texture make anyone wearing this wig look glamorous and gorgeous.

The best part about both of my favorite wigs? Because of the huge discount, they each cost less than two-hundred dollars. Wig Outlet even has great-quality, discount wigs in men’s styles, which I love because that is so coco wigs hard to find anywhere else. That’s why if you’re looking into buying a wig for the first time and you’re intimidated by all the different styles and prices, I recommend?checking out the lace front wigs at WigOutlet.com to find something high-quality, affordable, and exactly your style.
