How This Atlanta-based Salon Razor Chic Broke The Internet!

Atlanta salon Razor Chic received over 5 million views for her hairloss video. We find out more about the lady with the healing handsHi Razor Chic, it’s nice to finally meet you. For those who don’t know you in the UK, who is Razor Chic?

Jasmine Collins better known as Razor Chic of Atlanta is a business woman, a woman that empowers women to feel secure in rocking their own hair. I’m an inspirational stylist, customising hairstyles that reflect the wearer’s personality, helping to build confidence. I am blessed to work in a field that I am have so much passion for.

How long have you been in the hairdressing business?

Well over 20 years

Did you always want to be a hairdresser or a cosmetologist?

No I didn’t. [laughing] Hair was a gift God gave me that provided options. I stumbled upon my gift while playing in my aunt’s hair. The day my aunt let me wave her hair was the day I fell in love with this industry. I found my passion and purpose and I am thankful for the opportunities provided to me because of my decision to follow my passion

What services do you offer in your salon?

Razor Chic of Atlanta offers all services pertaining to hair but our main focus is on real hair services. We want to show the client how she can have red carpet hair, without the aide of extensions.

What would you say was your specialty? My specialty or gift is my eye for detail. That encompasses all the foundational methods of creating a hairstyle such as cutting colouring or styling.

Your video on hair loss broke the internet with over 5 million views. Were you surprised by the response?

I was very surprised. I was overwhelmed with the response because I just realised that there are so many women experiencing the same issue with hair loss and unfortunately the age of balding issues is becoming younger. The traction alopecia epidemic has been swept up under extensions and protective styles. People are seeing the risk of binding their hair down for unreasonably long periods of time. As I always say, I am not against hair extensions. I am against the improper use of hair extensions. You cannot use extensions on a consistent basis and clients need to be informed on what their hair will allow them to do. We as stylists, have to take responsibility and listen to the needs of the hair not the desire of the client, especially when it will cause more harm.

What are the main causes of hair loss in African American women?

Traction alopecia is the leading cause of hair loss in the black community. Now the reason behind traction alopecia is the improper use of extensions. That is the length of time extended hair is worn, improper installation methods that consistently pull on the follicle, and of course wearing hair that is too heavy for your hair to handle.

You say that over half your new clients suffer from some sort of hair loss caused by their hairstyling choices. How can you change their mindset?

Education. We need to step back into those building blocks that help to communicate the right choices for healthy hair such as the consultation and the home prescription. These are the key areas that allow us to educate the client on healthy hair choices versus negative hair choices. People appreciate a stylist with integrity and a reverence towards proper hair regimens. Again I say listen to the hair.

Is it your aim to educate women on better styling choices?Oh, most definitely. I am a true believer in customising a style that fits the lifestyle of the client and provides styling options. We are living in a fast pace world and many women like the convenience of extensions for time’s sake and consistent great hair days. However, you can have great hair with proper homecare instructions and a superbly executed custom haircut. Great hair days are not dependent upon extensions or wigs.

Can vivia wig supplements make a difference in hair growth?

Yes, vitamins are essential to hair growth. You are what you eat!! Your skin and hair depends heavily on your diet to grow or glisten

From left to right: Hairfinity (24); Protein World Hot Hair (£22) and Philip Kingsley PK4 Hair (£26)

The woman in the hair loss video is only 20-years-old, can her hair grow back?

Although she had extensive damage to her scalp, there are areas of follicle life on her scalp. Nonetheless I will not say that her hair will return to normal fullness but she will see areas comeback flip bob wig if she maintains a healthy hair regimen. However, there are cases where the hair follicle closes and becomes smooth. Once you see smooth or feel the absence of hair pores, hair growth has reach an irreversible condition.

What would you advise that person to do if someone had that type of hair loss?

Stop what you are doing and seek professional help. Discuss your issue with your stylist listen to her advice and do the work to recover from extension abuse.

What do you think about the natural hair movement?

I think it is an empowering movement, however it isn’t for everyone.

Can you expand upon that?

Yes, I believe that the desire to wear natural hair depends on your hair destination. If you are looking to wear a short cut that lays in a particular way, you are going to need a straightening system around the sides and back to accomplish the end look. However, if you are looking to swim fully in the curl pattern you own, then natural hair is definitely for you. I believe that true freedom isn’t just embracing your curl pattern but also rocking what God gave you.

Has the natural hair movement had an impact on your business?

No, my business has not been affected by the natural hair movement, because my salon is equipped to deal with all types of curl patterns.

Most natural hair bloggers don’t seem to trust hairdressers with their hair and lay the blame of their past hair growth failures on the hairdressers’ door. How do you respond to this?

Finding a good hairstylist is like finding a good doctor. How do you expect to have good results if you keep going to so many different doctors? I noticed that so many consumers keep chasing styles. They keep going from one stylist to the next. You have to find that one stylist and be under their supervision so they can monitor your hair and reach your hair goals. How are you choosing your stylist and has DIY styling really provided a better road for you? At the end of the day, hair needs to be treated by a stylist with a healthy hair work ethic.

Is there anything the hairstylist can do to regain the public’s trust?

The proof is in the pudding. My work has always spoken for me. The detail of my work attracted my clients and my dedication towards healthy hair and great styles have kept people loyal to me for over 15 years.

Do you have celebrity clients?

Everybody that sits in my chair is a celebrity.

Is there anyone who you would like to work with that is a celebrity that you haven’t worked with in the past?

Whitney Houston was my idol. She was definitely one celebrity that I would have loved to createiconic looks for. However, now that she is gone, my next top picks would be Oprah and Mary J Blige.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

I guess I would say the overwhelming responses I get from people when I’m out, at the salon, or in other cities. The emails, DM’s, phone calls, I receive from consumers, stylists or celebrities that I consider to be top tier, that know me and my work. It’s a humbling experience to know so many people that you looked up to for so long actually know who you are.

Do you practice what you preach with your own hairstyling choices?

Oh, most definitely! I cannot expect my clients to listen if I am not a shining example of what I am telling them. Walk the walk if you are talking the talk.

Where can we find you?

Tried & Tested – Palmers Manuka Flower Honey Range

Black Beauty & Hair intern and naturalista Sarah Fynn tries out Palmers Manuka Flower Honey products

Manuka Flower HoneyPalmer’s ? Nourishing Conditioner ? Leave-in Conditioning Cream ? Leave-in Conditioner Spray ? Finishing Hair Oil

The products are infused with Manuka flower honey, shea and cocoa butter and Alma oils. It claims to moisturise your hair whilst the natural anti-bacterial ingredients help promote healthy promoted hair and scalp.I used the conditioner to finger detangle and deep condition my hair. The consistency is thick which made it a bit difficult to get out of the bottle, however it has the right amount of ‘slip’ which made finger detangling a tad bit easier! I left it on for about 20 minutes mins, covered it with a few plastic bags and rinsed out.

I then used the LCO method to moisturise and seal my hair, using the Leave-in Conditioner Spray as the liquid leave in, the Conditioning Leave-in Cream as the cream and of course the Finishing Hair Oil as the oil part of this regime. I noticed small white flakes in my hair each time I used the cream on top of the spray. However these then would disappear as I was styling my hair.

Verdict: I love the conditioner! It left my hair feeling soft and well moisturised. Both leave in conditioners work well too but I don’t think I would pair them together next time. I prefer the spray to the cream as that left my hair softer. I didn’t notice much of a difference in terms of shine with the finishing oil. I am not a big fan of the smell, although it’s quite pleasant! In short, the conditioner and the leave-in spray were the best one for me out of the bunch. I am looking forward to using the products separately to see if I get different results.

My Hair is Falling Out. Here’s What I’m Going to Do to Fix It

Wigs are a gift and a curse, man. I love them so much because it makes managing that part of my life incredibly easy, plus I really love long hair. Lately, I have had the repetitive thought that maybe I should just shave it all off and start all over. I mean, I do go natural for two years and it was fine, but the thing that makes me hesitate is that I ended up relaxed again. Now, I wore wigs while natural as well and I didn’t have this problem. Now that my hair is literally weaker I have noticed a few things:

My edges are balding and my hairline is receding. Every since I started using the Got2Be glued in the yellow tube, they have been thinning and thinning. Well one day I just wanted to get home take my wig off and rest and I didn’t use anything to remove it and I literally felt my hair ripping out. I knew right away what had happened because it hurt!

What I’m doing to fix it:nearlyJamaican Black Castor Oil into my hairline a few times a week.

My hair has gotten shorter and weaker.maniac.that long, and there’s a lot of hair coming out of the comb. In addition, my hair became uneven and my ends were wretched looking before I trimmed it.

What I’m doing to fix it: I don’t put small cornrows in my hair anymore. I feel like I lose less hair when I just pull my hair back and put a scrunchie large wig in it. It makes combing and detangling it a lot easier too. If I do braid it, I will just do two or three large plaits or two big cornrows.

biotin gummiesaloe vera gel in my hair. I’m not sure how that’s going to turn out, though. Once it dries, my hair feels kind of crunchy. I do like that it doesn’t leave it feeling greasy.

if people just take the extra cornrow wig time and energy to make it from scratch, they would be able to tell the difference.I know better…! I know I should not be taking my wig off dry when I’ve use Got2Be; I know better than to use Got2Be directly on my hair; and I know that wigs f*ck up your hairline. But it is inevitable that we do things that we know better to do, but do it anyway out of pure convenience.

I am going to try my best to make sure my hair is rarely thirsty, properly oiled and supplied with vitamins to help it out. I’ll report back if and when I see noted progress!

Mohawks Make a Welcome Comeback And We’re Loving It!

Natural hair expert Dionne Smith discusses the natural version of the Mohawk and why it’s a perennial style that we like re-visiting

What is it about the ‘frohawk that has naturalistas clamouring?Natural hair gives honeycomb wig this look an extra uniqueness because of the inherent volume and texture and it’s artists like Janelle Monae that have helped set the trend.

As good as it looks, it looks complicated… is it hard to recreate? It might not look it, but this style is so easy to achieve and suits every occasion. You’ll need a good number of pins and like anything practice will make it perfect.

How can you make this style your own? There’s so much you can do to remix this style. Your ‘frohawk can be wild and untamed or you can roll and pin sections down to create giant bumps. Even your dress sense and accessories will play a part in bringing this look together.

Rihanna chooses dreads for her new film role

Rihanna’s hairstylist reveals why she asked to wear dreadlocks for Ocean’s 8

Cinemagoers will have the opportunity to witness Rihanna in action as the tech-savvy “Nine Ball” when Ocean’s 8 is released on June 8.

The singer’s choice of hairstyle was particularly integral to who she wanted her character to be.

Rihanna’s hairstylist Yusef Williams explained why it was so significant for Nine Ball to wear her hair in dreadlocks during the heist film.

According to Williams, Rihanna felt strongly about being representative of her Caribbean roots. ‘Her locks would maintain that tie to Africa,’ he told Refinery29.

‘She’d keep her accent. She wasn’t just going to be some American stiff wig girl in this movie. Nine Ball is still a Caribbean girl that just happens to be in America.’

? yusefhairnyc/Instagram

Williams stated that their aim was for Nine Ball to be ‘cool, chill and very minimal.’

‘When people have locs, it’s kind of like their crown,’ Williams said. ‘It’s their pride and joy.

“It’s like a flower… you gotta nourish it and watch it grow. Hair played a really big part in who Nine Ball came to be.’

Williams and his team of assistants wanted Rihanna’s dreadlocks to have a loose, reggae look, using shea butter and black seed oil to maintain her hair’s strength.

The locs had to be thinned out during filming, as Rihanna’s own hair wouldn’t have been strong enough to carry the weight of it otherwise.

? badgalriri/Instagram

Williams explains, ‘She was given the equivalent of  12 years of locs overnight.’

‘It was probably the easiest style she’s ever had, since she got to be free and cool and see herself differently,’ he said.

‘She’s a huge pop star, and then we kind of stripped her down and gave her locs that we didn’t make super, super pretty. She made them glamorous when she wanted, and then super casual when she wanted.’

Williams has assured that Rihanna will wear her hair in dreadlocks again in future.

ghd pull an all nighter!

ghd hosted a 12-hour super shoot overnight in London, showcasing the limitless possibilities of their latest range; Nocturne.

cute bob wigs

On Monday 2 October, ghd proved the infinite possibilities of their new Nocturne range by styling round the clock on a remarkable 12-hour shoot.

Ten cutting-edge stylists were invited to London’s uber-cool Crossrail Place Roof Gardens in Canary Wharf to style under the stars as part of a live, collaborative photoshoot.

Shooting on the night were session stylist Leighanne Regan, salon owner Sophie Laidlaw, F.A.M.E. Team member Jordanna Cobella, IT Guy finalist Jamie Benny, Headmasters art team member Chris Southern and Newcomer of the Year finalist Frazer Wallace. They were joined by Australian Hairdresser of the Year finalist, Uros Mikic, ghd’s Italian artistic director Igor Rago, German stylist Dashi Rasnici and Spanish stylist Jorge lace wig purple DeSancho.

Session stylist Leighanne Regan getting into the bight-time zone

Each stylist was assigned a model, then given 12 hours to create ten different looks each – resulting in an astounding 100 images produced overnight. With no basins and limited time, the stylists were able to maximise ghd’s kind-to-hair technology and optimum temperature to style, style and style again, transforming their models throughout the night to create optimum results without compromising the health of the hair.

The new Nocturne range is all about producing beautiful hair that blurs the boundaries between night and day and the shoot showcased that limitless style perfectly, with looks ranging from punk ponies and knotted mohawks to textured waves and beautiful breezy curls – all produced against the clock as the inky night sky gave way to dazzling sunlight.

Photographer Jack Eames and his team worked alongside the stylists to create the series of stunning images, with makeup provided by Max Factor and nails by OPI – all part of ghd’s new Coty family. The team started their shooting in the luscious, leafy open-air rooftop gardens, before adventuring into the otherworldly surroundings of Canary Wharf’s skyscrapers and penthouses for a shoot that told the story of girls seamlessly blending their night-time looks from party to afterparty and beyond.

As the stylists worked, a Facebook livestream united the British contingent with a simultaneous event in Sydney, Australia and Instagram blew up with #ghdnocturne shots showcasing the action as it happened.

ghd tools of every-kind on stand-by

No all-nighter is complete without a midnight feast, and neighbouring restaurant, Big Easy was on hand to provide belly-busting burgers throughout the night to fuel the troops. Endless coffee was also on hand to keep the momentum up, while DJ Charlie Banks soundtracked the shoot.

As the sun rose, Jack and his team produced first looks from the night, which were sent over to the ghd studio in Soho for a grand reveal in front of the press – many of whom had paid a visit to the shoot the previous night.

ghd global head of education, Jo Robertson, said: “This is the first shoot of its kind and the perfect way to showcase the infinite styling abilities of our new Nocturne range. All ghd products are designed to allow you to style and style again with no compromise to hair health, but this range is also about celebrating the blurred lines between night and day. Today, women wear their hair how they want, when they want and with these tools and our inspiring trend looks created by Zoe Irwin, stylists and clients alike will be empowered to create hair without limits. We’re so proud of the ten stylists that took part in tonight’s shoot and the work they produced against the clock – it just goes to show that with the right tools and teamwork, anything is possible.”
